• Pick a place to go if a tornado is headed your way
• Have a weather radio or TV accessible to stay alert on warnings
• Cover up, debris causes most deaths and injuries
• Don't stay inside a mobile home. Get out to a shelter or safe place. People are 15 times more likely to die in a mobile home.
• After a tornado, keep your family together until Emergency help arrives.
• Always have an emergency kit ready.

Know the signs of a Tornado:

• Tornadoes are formed from a severe thunderstorm that may include heavy precipitation, hail and either dead calm wind- or fast wind shifts.
• Strong winds and blowing debris accompanied with a loud sound may alert you a tornado is headed your way. Many describe a tornado as sounding like a Freight Train.
• Debris and dust that is spiraling under a cloud base - not all tornados will have a funnel shape!
• A dark cloud base that is close to the horizon, sometimes with lightening flashes and a blue-green hue.

Know the difference between a watch and a warning:
Tornado Watch:
Tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area. Review and discuss your emergency plans, and check supplies and your safe room. Be ready to act quickly if a warning is issued or you suspect a tornado is approaching. Acting early helps to save lives!

Tornado Warning:
A tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. Tornado warnings indicate imminent danger to life and property. Go immediately underground to a basement, storm cellar or an interior room (closet, hallway or bathroom).
